Sergey waited  patiently in line for the bread shop to open. The news said that productivity was up five percent. Maybe the line would be shorter tomorrow.

While waiting he started to ponder, how did we get here? Our future appeared so bright just a few years ago after the fall of the former regime. We were all given shares in our workplace and each of us was a CEO of our nation. What could go wrong?

Then just as I put my feet under the manager’s desk a small gimlet-eyed man oozed into my office and told me that there had been a mistake, a glitch in the system that had now been corrected. I was now worker 3842 and as to being CEO of the nation, leave it with him, he won’t bother me with the details.

Well, Sergey thought, this gimlet-eyed little man probably did know more about running the factory Sergey has worked diligently in these past 30 years so perhaps he’s right. But he never mentioned anything about bread queues. Hopefully there’s not much grit in today’s ration and there’s always tomorrow to look forward to.
